Hi y'all, I'm Iatros. Older guy (65) with itch to fly helis. Decided upon Gaui 550 after deciding that larger rotor disc should be more stable for learning, as i plan to keep rotor speed down and collective set for 'newbie'. The Gaui is ATF model with composite frame. I have been training with Real Flight for couple of years, and can now do a reasonable hover, fly around, and out and back. I figure its time to try the real thing. I have my radio, a new Specktrum DX8 but have to decide upon servos, gyro, batteries, BEC. I would love to hear from any as to their combinations for this machine.

Welcome Iatros! Looks loke you've got the basics down pat! I'm probably not the right guy to answer your questions about a basic setup because I kind of never really used a basic setup with mine. In fact, it was only stock for about a week... probably because I'm a bit of nut. I'm certain though that Jerry and some of the members would be more than happy to share basic equipment outlines for you.
I can tell you what I used to start out, though. For the cyclic servos, I used Hyperion DS20x-smd's. Initially, my tail servo was a Futaba 9256, but that went to another helicopter (great tail servo, just pricey), Spartan DS760 gyro, Castle ICE 75 ESC (mounted between the front landing gear), and a stock Gaui Motor, I think it was the 1300kv, but it was way too hard on batteries, so I went to a Z30 from Helidirect. ZPower Z20's work great and would probably be the best choice for you given your post. Batteries... well, the Gaui motor ruined two Turnigy 2650 batteries pretty quickly, so I went to Hyperion 3300 VX 35C 6X eries.
One suggestion about your radio. Please check with the Spektrum web site to make sure your radio isn't affected by the recalls. If it is, please do send it in ASAP.
Thanks for joining, Iatros and I hope you enjoy the site!

Well, first let say, welcome Iatros and thanks for joining us. I think you will like flying the Hurricane 550. It is very stable to learn on, but can also be set up for some pretty aggressive flying as your skills progress. I have both a 425 and a 550 and love flying them. There are lots of good electronics out there depending on your helicopter budget. I tried to keep my build costs reasonable so that I could build more helicopters. Here are a few of the electronics that I have used in my 425 and 550 and some that I got for my next build. Stock Gaui ESC's. So far, no troubles with them. Spektrum/JR DS821 servos on cyclic. Again, no problems so far. HobbyWing 5A UBEC JR G770 3D gyros and JR 890 tail servo Stock Gaui 850kv motor. Runs very hot, but no other problems Tonic-X ( Z-power) Z20 motor. Runs cool. Lots of power. GForce 3s 3300mah batteries. ( 2 hooked in series ) Price is right. I am currently getting ready to build another one using one of Scott's HeadHunter frame upgrade kits as soon as he has them available. For it I have; Z-Power Z30 1100kv motor that I got from Bill. ( One of our support members here ) Align 75 amp ESC and HobbyWing 5A UBEC. DS 821 servos on cyclic. JR G770 gyro with Hyperion Atlas DS20 GMD tail servo Hope this helps some, Jerry

Welcome to the site, Dave! Nice to see fellow flybarless folks showing up! I've got a Mini-V bar version 5 on one of my HeadHunters. I've not flown it because it's winter in this hemisphere, but I'm chomping at the bit to do so!

i'm matt
started off with a blade 400 , but had enough of repairing it more than flying it. went back to planes for a couple of years. bought a king 3 which is pretty rubbish compared to the blade. so last week bought a gaui 425 bare bones to build. still need to buy blades, motor, esc and tail servo. have cyclics and gyro so far.
