I am getting closer on the Gaui 500 setup. I have been gearing it down searching for my lost flight time. I am closer. I got another 30 seconds and have 30 seconds still to make up. I just geared it down again and will be putting the shorter flybar back on but with the more aggressive position on the paddles. I hope the flip and roll rate is not too affected and the bog does not come back. I would be really happy with 5 min flight times again. The one nice thing about the new motor is that I can finally run the Gaui canopy. I think the new look is really nice!! Attachments:

Ivan, what size batteries are you running? A few pages back I think you mentioned 2200mah. Just to give you an example, I am using 6s 2500mah packs in my 425 and getting 4:30 minutes of flight time with a head speed close to 3000. That is running a Z20-1470kv motor. On my 550 I am only running about 1800 to 1900 head speed and getting 7 min. with 3300mah batteries, using a stock Gaui 850kv motor. I have actually pushed them to 9 min. just to see what happened, but was putting back about 2900mah. I keep my timer on 7 min. but being an old fart, I can't fly that long and usually land well before the timer goes off. BTW, it looks great with the stock canopy on it.

I have two packs for the Gaui 500. One Hyperion VX G3 2200mAh 35-50C and one A Plus 2500mAh 25C.
Initially I was hoping to fly it on paired up 3S packs from my 450s as Gaui suggests but those did not work for shiznit.
As I am getting into this heli more and more, I am considering buying batteries specifically for it. I think I read something about a mod for the battery tray to run a 6S pack more conveniently. I will have to do some research.

For the latest round of experiments with the Gaui 500, I dropped the gearing (head speed) down once again. I am currently running a 13T pinion, 60T front main and 20T OWB. This is just one step from the bottom of the available gearing for the Gaui. I also removed the longer Trex 600 flybar and put the stock one back in. I put the KBDD paddles on in the more aggressive position. When I was originally trying to get the flip and roll speed up, I forgot and skipped the more aggressive setting on these paddles in favor of a larger set of KBDD paddles. The idea was that the paddles would be create less drag being on a smaller diameter disk and hopefully reduce battery consumption. My fear was that the flip and roll rate would not be adequate and that the bogging would come back.
Flight impression: I did not measure head speed but I could tell it was slower. It no longer sounded like it was pushing hard to keep the head speed. Instead, that sound was replaced by a nice mechanical hum. Collective response was plenty good and not overly aggressive as it usually is. The flip and roll rate was SLOW!!! It was very manageable though. There was no bogging so that made me happy. I did some more flips and rolls and some FFF. It was flying exceptionally smooth and steady. It felt great. FFF was fast but not too fast. Overall, the only thing I did not like was the flip and roll rate. I tried a FF roll and thought it would never end. LOL.
When I last set up the heli, I ended up adjusting both ELE and AIL for 6° pitch and ended up with -41 on AIL and +50 on ELE. While testing this motor with the much higher head speed, I ended up turning down the cyclic mix 10% get the flip and roll rates where I wanted them. For the second battery today, I put the 10% back in and got a very nice medium speed controlled flip and roll rate. She is flying like a champ now. Most of the second battery was used flipping into inverted, making one or two corrections and then flipping back into right side up.
Both flights were 4 1/2 min and the first used 1625mA and the second 1541mA. I think I will keep the timer set there and take it easier on these poor batteries.

Glad to see that you are getting it dialed in a little better. That is one of the hard things with this heli and so many booms and blade lengths, motor and gearing options, paddles, tail blades, etc. It is nice to have the option to go from 425 blades, all the way up to 550mm blades but can be hard to get the perfect set-up.

It is really flying nice. I got one pack in after work in the neighbors front yard. I actually did a front flip which I normally would not do with the larger helis but man she is flying nice.

I worked on the Gaui 500 last night and got the new CNC main rotor grips, CNC main rotor yoke and thrusted tail grips installed (thanks Scott). I have never had the head apart on this heli so it was pretty cool to see how Gaui puts it all together. The yoke fit like a dream as did the main rotor grips. I am very impressed with the overall machining and quality of the parts. The main grips use 4mm bolts so I was able to remove adapters that Jerry had sent me (thanks Jerry). While I had the head apart, I also installed a custom spindle sleeve that Nexgen made and sent me. Also fit like a charm. Looking forward to getting it up in the air today. Attachments:

Hey Scott, what canopy did you find worked well with the battery tray mod? That setup is not going to work with my fiberglass 425 canopy (204166). That canopy actually looks small on the heli anyway now that it is stretched to swing 500s. I was thinking about the 204162 canopy but am not sure how much bigger it is than the one I have now. Would love to do the battery mod and run my 3000mAh 6s batteries under the hood. This is what I have now. This is what I am thinking. Maybe I should just get this one and paint or sticker it up how I like it.

Ivan, I have one of the 204162 canopies (middle photo) that you can have if you want it. It's new and unused. However, when I pulled it out of the box the first time it was by one of the narrow "ears" where the mounting grommet is and the weight of the canopy was enough to fold the ear over and it cracked the outer gel coat a little. The fiberglass backing isn't torn though. It's hardly noticeable (you can't actually see it unless you bend it) but I wasn't impressed with the quality of it at all. For the same price I bought a couple of the Fusuno canopies and thy are FAR, FAR, superior in quality. They even have the Hurricane 550 name painted on them (no stickers needed). Anyway, if you want it it's yours. No charge.... just send me your address and I'll send it to you.

Bill's dead on. I turned him on to the same battery tray mod that I gave you and I don't think he's had any issues with Fusuno's on it. I know I didn't. Bill?

Just as a reference, the solid white canopy in the pics I posted is an unpainted Fusuno canopy for the Hurri 550. It is basically the same canopy as Bill's and Scott's except they are using one of the nicely pre-painted versions. HeliDirect has a few of the painted versions in stock. www.helidirect.com/canopies-hurricane-550-c-1_421_425.hdx

Jerry, Scott and Bill!!! Thanks so much for the info. That is exactly what I needed to hear / see. Jerry the pics are awesome and thanks for the links to the Fusuno canopies. Bill, I did see your setup in the "mod thread" on HF and even with your larger batteries it looked like there was room. It is great to know that your canopy is the same size as the H550 one. I PMd you about your offer on the Gaui one.

Ivan, nice job on the set-up and flying. It looks like it flys real smooth. Are you using the medium sized boom and 522XL belt? What is your head speed?
That is going to be my next build. I have a 425 and 550 and they fly a lot different from each other. I have all the stuff to built a mid-boomed 500 except for an RX. I was just kinda waiting to see when Scott might have a HeadHunter conversion kit ready. Hate to spend the time building it on a plastic frame, then tear it apart again to build a HH framed one.

Jerry, yes, it is one smooth flying bird. I am running the 522XL belt on this one. It is the medium stretch. Head speed should be around 2000 RPMs IIRC. I will need to measure it. The way this one is flying, I am really thinking about building one at 425 again. I would also love to build it with the HH frame so I can pound the hell out of it. See if I can make it outperform my Trex 500

Scott The Fusunos work perfectly with the plastic frame "nose mod". I've used 3300 6S Turnigy's and even a 3700 6S Aplus that came with my Gaui kit with those canopies. The 3700 gets a bit nose heavy so the 3300's are the more practical limit for me. Ivan - Great job on that Gaui 500 flying video. I was really impressed with that stretch of inverted plus your nose-in hovering. Nice work as usual. I've been concentrating on planks for a while now but I'll have to try to get some practice in with the H550 one of these days. Bill
