Only one tank today... I didn't have time for more because I installed a fuel magnet and modified the tank mounting to include fuel line slit length wise and slid over the tank rails. I found there was some chaffing on the tank and this should take care of it. The fuel magnet works great! No more leaning out! I did hear a grinding/rubbing noise when flying today, so I have to take time in the morning to sort that out. Also, after I flew I noticed there was rust or some kind of oxidized material on the tail output shaft, so I cleaned that up with some light machine oil and all appears well there, now. I intend to burn the rest of the first gallon in the morning. After that, I'm gonna debate on whether or not to install my governor. I may just wait until after vacation because next week, starting Saturday is supposed to take a turn back toward winter. That's good in a way... I'd hate to go on vacation and have it be warmer here than there! Scott

Glad to see that you are getting the little 'bugs' worked out of it. Your weather is like ours I guess, been real nice here all week, but winter is supposed to return next week. I remember back in the 80's when I went on a cruise in February, and checked the weather on the ship and found it was in the 60's back home while I was gone. Snowed like crazy the day I got home.

Yeah... I'm kind of happy the weather is worse than last week! At least I won't be missing much flying this week! My parts order was delayed two days. I'm kind of ticked about it. That makes delays on three of the last four orders from this out-of-state New England-based vendor who shall go nameless, directly. In their defense, they did refund the expedite fee they charge for same-day shipping. But still... it looks like I'm not going to get to finish that first gallon of fuel before vacation. Scott

I finally got the stuff from AlleRC today. Took 8 days to get here via UPS ground. Guess I better get the 425 ready to maiden this weekend. If you are anything like me, the weather is always great here when I go away on vacation, so, It might be great here while you are on vacation too. Look on the bright side, at least you will have something to look forward to when you get home. Jerry

LOL! Yeah I do... and then it will be tempered by that dreaded four-letter word: W-O-R-K! It's cool, though... I took an extra day to get used to nights, again. Scott

It has been a while since I updated stuff on the Outrage. Well, today I finally had time to look at two issues that have been bothering me.
1. Fuel leak after flying. 2. Vibration at higher RPM causing the tail to jerk some.
So... I pulled the engine and checked the head bolts since the leak appeared to be coming from there. No problem. I had posted a question on the Freak and Outrage Pro, Eric Brandenberg answered that his does the same thing. I thought it prudent just to be sure.
On the vibration. I found several screws looser than I would like so hopefully that will fix that. Time will tell.
Bottom line is I'm ready to start flying it again!

Vibration? No way, not on a nitro. ;D Just kidding Scott. Hope you find the problem.

I thought I would be able to fly it today, but no go. We have 40-45mph gusts. Not cool, at all. Scott

I am starting to feel more comfortable flying the 550 in winds up to about 15 to 20mph but no higher than that, and 10mph is about my limit with the little BH450.

I probably could have burned out that last bit of fuel today, but I didn't... I wanted to get my blank 550 canopy ready to be shipped out... that meant making the cutout for the motor and trimming the bottom for a better fit, then sanding... I took my time on it and it's nearly completely round. Considering I did most of the work with a barrel sander on my Dremel, I think it's pretty cool. So, it's supposed to be very warm tomorrow so I'm gonna burn it out and make my pump work on an Outrage fuel bottle...

I burned the last of the pink fuel today! Man, I have to say that helicopter is powerful. I mean a pitch pump and it's gone. That said, I don't let it get too far because I'm in my back yard... and now that stops, too. If the weather holds up, I'm gonna try it where I normally fly and we'll go from there. It's awesomely powerful, though.

Time to revive this thread... Why?
Simple. I ran the Velocity 50 out of fuel today (most likely) causing a forced auto that resulted in me flairing too early and caused the helicopter to fall like a rock from about ten feet up. Landed skids down but turned over. The blades were completely undamaged. Damaged some pretty expensive stuff. Frames, broken in four places, both OWB's (gear and clutch) shot, boom (subtle bend downward), and some other stuff. Total so far, about $230.00 with the big ticket item being each frame set which are over 50 bucks apiece.
It was the first flight after using up all but the last gallon of Outrage Formula fuel. I started to use a case of Rotor Rage Masters Blend that I picked up at IRCHA last year. I guess it burns faster or because of the decrease oil load it runs leaner, either way, I had checked the fuel level not two circuits before. This is a first. Time to use the timer for Nitro, too.
I'm bummed, it was the first crash on the V50.

Dang, sorry to hear that Scott. It seems like you have had a streak of bad luck lately with your helicopters. If I remember right, you had a bad crash with one of your HeadHunters, then a crash with the Trex 500, then had to down your F6 to send in the esc for repair, and now the V50 goes in. As much as I enjoy the hobby, I think I would be pretty frustrated with all that has happened to you lately.
I hope you get them all back in the air soon. We will be running out of nice flying weather before we know it.

I'm just bummed about it. It's totally my fault. I'm pretty sure I ran it out of fuel then had a forced auto that I blew. When I put it all against how many times I've flown the V50 in the last two weeks, it was about time to blow it. A gallon of the Outrage stuff usually lasts 10-12 flights. Well, I've put in 20 in those two weeks. I'm not getting down, though. I'm bummed, but not down I flew in strong winds this afternoon so that's a contributor to the crash, I also flew with new fuel so that's one, too. It won't happen again. I just don't think the frame shouldn't have broken with a 10foot fall. Scott

Well, I think the frame breaking in the '10 foot fall' has a lot to due with the weight of the helicopter too. I had my little Gaui 200 shut down due to a poor solder connection on the motor once and it fell about 20 feet with no damage, and it does not auto at all. It just falls out of the air with no chance to even try to slow it's fall to the ground.
I stink at autos even though I do practice them on occasion. I always get that 'pucker factor' and flare too soon resulting in a loss of head speed, then end up bouncing pretty hard on the skids. The grass is pretty thick at the ball fields where I fly, so it usually softens the landing a little bit.
Glad it didn't get you down though. I get bummed every time I crash, although I have been pretty lucky so far this year with no crashes ( yet )............

Ouch, that looks pretty bad Scott. Sorry to see all the damage. Have you started to repair it yet?
I been in bed sick for a few days and just now getting up and around a bit, so haven't been on for a few days.

Jerry,
I hope you're on the mend! I wondered where you were, but hope you get better soon.
Yeah, it's crashed pretty badly. Lots-o-bucks. I got the frame halves, canopy breakaway tabs, boom, and tail fin/horizontal stab in Saturday and replaced them. I'm just waiting on the rest. Bummed to the max about it, too. Oh, well.

I finished rebuilding today, final parts count are:
Link Frames Breakaway tabs Starter Shaft Clutch bearing Clutch bell Clutch Pipe Fuel tubing Fuel magnet foam Check valve Backplate RPM sensor Gear struts Gear Tubes Boom Boom supports Horizontal stabilizer Tail hub Tail output shaft Tail blades
I think that was enough. Darn close to a rekit. Fun rebuild, though. I put the frames on one side at a time so that way none of the electronics position changed. Test flight tomorrow after the Permatex stuff cures, weather and funfly permitting.
