Did you guys practice a lot of nose in hovering when you started learning to fly, and did it help? Just wondering, because I just started in this hobby a little over a year ago at age 50, and soon after learning to hover tail in and both sides in, I just started practicing flying circles and figure 8's and some circuits and never really practiced nose in much.
One thing that I have found to give me trouble sometimes is if the heli gets into an odd unplanned nose in position, I sometimes have a real hard time recovering from it and have had a couple crashes because of that.
Was just wondering if you guys spent a lot of time learning nose in, or did you kinda go at it just like I did.

I went for it... crashed a lot, too. I'm doing a lot of nose in on the simulator. I'm doing it indoors, too. About the longest I've gone is a minute.
Ivan, over in the Struggling thread has been saying he's using his indoor flying time to master all 8 orientations. I think it's a good thing, too. So, I plan on spending my first three packs indoors on orientation training--not that there's a lot of room for anything else.

Jerry and Scott, I am using this winter to master the 4th of the 8 orientations. Like you Jerry, I went from tail in and side on hovering to forward flight and skipped the whole nose in thing. I paid for this as you can see by the attachment. I am getting better but it is not coming fast or easily. I want to wait till I finally have it down to post up a vid.... but it is taking so long. I am really having a hard time with coming towards nose in in a clockwise direction (viewed from above). Right side is is also the tougher of the two sides for me to hover in. Lately I have been taking off and landing right side in to help me practice that side. Clockwise piros are also my weaker direction. I have found that stick time is the only cure for this. Hopefully it all pays off. Attachments:

I know what you mean, Ivan. I have problems with my right hand, so I think Tuesday, I'm going to try to spin into nose in while letting go of the cyclic stick. Then I'll just watch drift and hope it doesn't go forward or backward. That's another issue. I've been able to recover from around 20-25 feet up but it's nerve wracking.

Looks great to me, Ivan. I'm very impressed with your smoothness, too. Even the recovery from 3/4 nose in was good... if it was a recovery! LOL! Great job and thanks for sharing the video. I now know where my aspirations should be!
And on another subject...Did you make it to EFest?

Thanks Scott. I am just about to the point where I will attempt slow CCW rotations which will basically cover every orientation. Doing it in quarters helped me get past the 5:00 position without crashing... now I just need to remember to breath.

Breathing... I honestly forget when I'm doing something outside my comfort zone.

Ivan, VERY nice job on the nose-in video. Looked really smooth to me. Thanks for posting....definitely something to aspire to.

Well, I am glad to see that I am not the only one that kinda jumped into FF before taking the time to perfect nose in hovering. Ivan, it looks like you are doing a great job at going back to basics. I have been practicing nose in on the sim since it is just too windy to fly here in the winter. Also practicing backward flight as that is also something that I had lots of trouble with before winter set it. I just have to learn to fly the nose better. You know, pull the nose up toward the rotor blades, or push it down toward the skids no matter which orientation the helicopter is in. Occasionally for fun I will try a little inverted flying on the sim just to get a better feel for flying the nose, although I don't practice it yet with my helis. Just can't wait for spring to get here.

I fly Aerofly Professional Delux. It is OK. My laptop will not support Phoenix or Real Flight

I am currently using Clearview, but hope to get Phoenix as soon as I get the extra funds.

I'm using Phoenix. I've got RF 4.5 and Clearview. If you are looking for something good that's free, get Clearview. It's easy to fly with it and you can tune it to make it harder. I got Phoenix for one reason: The Hurricane 550. They've got a model in beta that is stellar. With some tuning, it can be made into a 425. The T-Rex 450 pro model is spot on, as well. I can crash it just in Phoenix just like in real life! I think Phoenix for me is the best heli sim of those I've used. I tried RF4.5 for a year and it never really felt right to me. I could fly it--for me it's really hard to fly a helicopter on it--but it seems to be more geared toward airplanes. I dunno, maybe it's supposed to be harder, but I got to the point where it was just too frustrating. Scott

Like Scott, I use Phoenix but have also owned RF 4.5 and Clearview. I agree that Clearview is a good low cost simulator (it's not free, however).
I also agree that Phoenix seems more geared toward helis and RF toward planes. I also like the new beta H550 for Phoenix and hopefully they will come out with the final version soon.
Basically, I also like everything Scott said. ;D ;D ;D

great video, i think i will try that. nose in is still hard to do. I to started with clearveiw sim, it was $40.00 down load a year ago, but i just got the phoenix a couple months ago. i realy like that because of all the free updates for life. so many choices to fly. good luck to all

Phoenix for me right now is the best. Scott I agree. I can't fly very well in either Phoenix or real life so Phoenix must be pretty accurate! ;D ;D ;D Bill
