My BEC battery is getting tired now and needs replacing but what C rating should it be? I was at a model airshow last weekend but the dedicated 2S 1000mA LIPO rx batteries only had a 1C rating, so is this enough for a Gaui 550 with Futaba digital servo's all round?

Are you using the battery as a back-up or as the main supply for the system ie: no BEC, if it is a back-up to a BEC then a lot of ppl are using the eneloop packs as they have a lower self discharge rate and in an emergency only have to give enough power for 1 auto, if memory serves me they use the 1000 mah pack. If for the main rx supply then definately something above 10c would be needed I would think. The 1C packs you refer to are probably the max charge rate as I could not see the point of a 1A rx battery.

Thanks for your Malcolm. My little grey cells say the bigger C rating the better but the rx packs I have found all seem to be rated for discharge rates of 1 to 3 C. I did find the specified 950mA Gaui rx battery (926080) on one vendors site but it does not state the C rating. Mine is driving the Gaui BEC the Spektrum AR6200 receiver, a G770T gyro and all the Futaba digital servo's, hence my concern!

I don't really think you need an RX specific battery to run the electronics. On my 550 I use an Outrage 2s 2500mah 25c lipo to power the electronics, hooked to the stock Gaui voltage regulator. I can easily get about 20 flights on it before recharging. On my HeadHunter framed '500" I use some old E-Sky 3s 1000mah batteries out of my old King 2's to power the electronics, but hooked to a Hobbywing bec rated at up to 6s. I can only get about 6 flights out of those batteries as they old and tired.
On my 425's, I just run a Hobbywing bec hooked to the 6s flight battery since I didn't want to add the extra weight of an RX battery to them.

Thanks for your input Gerry, I too have some old but still serviceable ESKY 1100mA C15 packs around so think I will try one of those. I just could not work out why a dedicated rx pack @ 2S 1000mA C1, cost £2.00 more than a 2S 1000mA 25C pack of the same brand over here in the UK. Must be demand driven I suppose.

Hey Barry, just a word of caution. If you are using the old Gaui bec/regulator that came in the 550 kits, I think it is made for a 2s battery (7.4 volts) only. If your old E-Sky packs are 3s I wouldn't use them, unless of course you are using a different bec that is rated for 3s or higher.
I could be mistaken about the old Gaui bec, but I do remember seeing something in the manual showing a wiring diagram with a 2s battery hooked to it.

Hi Jerry, It is the original BEC and I had already noted it has a 2S requirement but (fortunately) one of my old 3S 1000mA Esky packs has one of the outer cells with a high esr, so it may well become the donor for my 550.
Many thanks for your advice.

Although I have never tried it before, I was thinking about trying to take a couple of 3s 1500mah batteries apart, and remove a cell to use them as rx batteries. I have some that were from my old King 2's that are now retired, and I have no use for them now. If I decide to try it someday, I will let you guys know how well, or how badly it turns out. Jerry
