What 3S battery packs are you guys using on your Gaui 550's, as the temperatures are dropping over here in the UK now and my old Thunder Power 3S 2200 C25 Lipo's are getting a bit lethargic.
Mine is a CF version with the 1500W-kV1100 motor and 75A esc and currently using the 55 cm CF blades.
Not looking for full 3D performance just 'normal' sports flying and a reasonable (5 minute) flight time.
Look forward to hearing your suggestions.

Hiya
I am from the UK (now in USA) and never had too many problems with the cold, all i did was to keep the batteries in a "cool bag" but instead of having the usual ice pack in there i would have a small hot water bottle instead, this would keep the cells warm enough for all but maximum drain rates, What you will find is that as the cells cool down you will lose some of the punch that you would normally expect but seeing as you are only using 25C cells i would not expect much anyway, Realistically the cells are pretty close to limit as 25x2.2A is 55A max current and the 1500W motor could easily pull that without breaking a sweat. LiPo's do not appreciate being worked too hard so if you plan to replace your packs i would go with 3000 to 4000Mah and 30C to 40C discharge rates, this will guarantee a good flight time with plenty of reserve left so you will not be risking overheating the cells, google lipo fires to see why. Regards

Not sure how much difference there is between the plastic and CF frames as far as the center of gravity, and battery clearance under the canopy.
In my plastic framed, long boomed 550 I run 2x3s 3300mah 25c in series. They are a tight fit under the canopy, and the nose was a little heavy, so I use a 2s RX battery mounted inside the rear of the frame to get the CoG right. I am using the old 'A' type plastic canopy which is smaller than the 'B' type, and the Fusuno canopies which offer more battery room. With 550mm blades and light sport flying I could get 8 min flights, but I never fly it that long as I start to loose my concentration after about 5 or 6 minutes. ( Old age, lol)
My batteries are 3 years old though, and the newer lipos are generally lighter than the older ones, so the CoG would likely be much closer without the extra RX battery in the frame. If you like, I can weigh and measure my 3300's for you if that will help you out any.

Thanks for your replys Malc and Jerry. Interesting to note you are both recommending 3300mA or bigger cells. I have the older F/G canopy and the newer lighter thin plastic canopies but both are quite tight fit over the batteries, so maybe the C/F frame is slightly taller gthan the plastic one. Which brands of Lipo's have you found to give both a good life and performance?

I run Hyperions or Voltz. Of course (in the answer that went away somehow) I'm using 6S batteries. 3300 mah, as well. My Hyperions have three seasons on them and my Voltz have one, so far. One of the Hyperions needs to be destroyed due to crash damage, though.

Unfortunately, I really can't recommend a certain brand. I have been using Mega Powers in my 425 and 550 and they have been real good, but they are not available any more. I have also used the GForce batteries from Value Hobby with pretty good results, but, they do not ship outside of the U.S, so that won't help you either. I use Hyperion 2s batteries in my Gaui 200 and they work very well.
Scott, I have no idea what would have happened to your previous post that isn't here. It doesn't show up in your post list, and I checked the security log and there were no deleted posts in it. The only entries in the security log this month are several posts that were 'modified' by the posters, and one request for a forgotten password.

Thanks Again for the information Scott and Jerry. Think the bias is going towards Hyperions, so out comes the credit card again!!

There are a lot of folks who swear by Gens Ace batteries, too. Just remember, I think we agree that 3300mah is the sweet spot.

I too have heard a lot of good things about the Gens Ace batteries, but I haven't tried them yet myself. I might pick a couple up in the spring. Can never have too many lipos. Scott, I have accidentally deleted one of my own posts before when meaning to edit it. That is why I looked to see if I could find your missing post as it will show in the log, but didn't see it. I sent you a PM one day and couldn't figure out why you didn't respond. Somehow it must have ended up in that black hole too as you never got it and it didn't show up in my out box either, lol. Musta been this guy, hehe....

Thanks for the heads up Malcolm. Unfortunately Midlands is totally closed this week while they update their web page but they are due to reopen on Saturday. The only down side to visiting the shop is that Matt keeps selling me expensive things that I did'nt even know I needed!! Last time I came away a new 8S Lipo charger and an MCP-x!

Todd, my helicopters and batteries are out in my truck right now, but I will bring in a couple batteries tomorrow and weigh and measure them for you. Keep in mind, as I posted for Barry earlier, mine are 3 year old packs and are probably much heavier than todays packs. I had to stick a 2s RX battery in the bottom of the frame to get the CG spot on.
I use a single 6s 2650 on the bottom mount of my new 425 build and the CG is perfect, so the long boom 550 should be able to handle larger batteries.
