Hi all, Call me Sebastien I am 32 I will join your groups as I bought yesterday a second hand GAUI 550 It look like the blades are 470mm (rotor diameter 970mm) Rest of the components are Motor Z- Power A Serie KV 1700 u/min.(3-6 s Lipo). Based on this, I assume it run on Carbon blades as I don't have gears details yet. 3 Futaba S3152 Digital Servos (looking to specs they looks a bit slow but as I am starting, I will stay with them). 1 Blue Bird Digital Servo.(as tail servo). I have one Futaba 9257 in my electronic supply box Hobby King HK401B GYRO (but I also have a GY401 and one Spartan DS760 that could be installed on it) So I need to buy ESC (I think I will go for a CC Ice 75 or ice 100 as I already have a ice 50) and Lipos I also have a Spektrum DX6i and AR6200 to pilot it The virus started last october when I bought a Nine eagle dual rotor for inside flight. After two weeks, I was bored with it so I bought a DX6i and Blade MSR Now I have three micro helis, two FP 300 class (one is still building in progress) and one HK450 kit that I started. But it appear that the HK450 is too fast to learn with, so I was looking for a 500 class heli. Hurricane is a nice choice as you could set it from 425mm to 550mm (even if I think I will stop at 500mm) I also have Phoenix v3 to train at home Last info, I am French but I work/live in Munich (germany). IF there is other munich gaui owners, feel free to contact me as I try to build hobby links here. I will keep your updated in upcoming months If you have any advice, feel free to say but I will read threads soon

Hello Sebastien, and welcome to the site. Looks like you got bitten by the helicopter bug pretty bad too. One little piece of advice on your Gaui build. The 1700KV motor is not very well suited for running 500mm or larger blades. Most people run something between 850kv and 1100kv for the larger bladed helicopters. You could use it by running a 60T primary gear and a 13T pinion but it might not have the power you want. Just a thought. Jerry

Hi Sebastien! Welcome to the site. I agree with Jerry, you got bit, badly! I do hope you enjoy the site and that your Gaui experience is a good one. I agree with Jerry on the motor capacity. I also agree with his gearing choice as an alternative. I do think that eventually you'll end up getting a more compatible motor, but it is less expensive to simply gear. We look forward to hearing more about your helicopter adventures! Enjoy the addiction! Scott

Hi, So you think I should change both (motor / gear) or only gear as I don't clearly understand? I was planning to do an order on flying hobby website when I will have received the heli ( I was planning to to get a Z20 980KV)
And could it not be a good idea to run on 5S (to decrease motor speed). Based on my calcultation, with 1700KV running on 5S and 13/60/19/61, I would get a 2100 rpm headspeed
Another question: for the 550, is it better to buy 6S LIPO or use 2 3S in serie? It look like that on the 425 , 2 3S is better (one on the top of the frame and one inside the frame) I will think that on the 550 it is better to fit a 6S inside the frame and one 2S on top of the frame(for the UBEC).

The Z20-980kv motor is a very popular choice for the Hurricane 550. I have never tried running 5s, but I suppose you could try it if you want with the 1700kv motor but it might be a little short on power.
As far as running a single 6s or 2x3s in series, it's really a matter of choice. I run 2x3s 3300mah in series in my Hurri 550, 1 on top and one on the bottom. On my 425 I modified the front of the frame and run a single 6s 2500mah. There are some photos of it here in either the photos board or the "mods" board I think.
You don't need to run a separate 2s lipo for the electronics unless the bec you get is only rated for 7.4 volts. I use a HobbyWing 5A ubec on my 425 running directly off of the 6s flight battery. You can buy many different brands of ubec's that are designed for running on 6s or more, then you don't need the extra RX lipo. Hope this helps.

Thanks
I just ordered a sonicx Z20 980KV from heli direct. I also bought a ice 75 and some metals parts for hurricane 550.
I will also get some 550L tail parts and 500L wood blades from a austrian shop.
So only thing missings is LIPO and checking everything

Still not much news I get the heli, the Z20-980 motor and the Ice 75 I was waiting for a 425 ircha kit (to train me before unbuilding the 550) but it will not come soon (at least 15 days) I found a cheap spare complete plastic main rotor that should arrive soon But I did my first mistake last week. I order one more turnigy 3S 2200( I have already one from my hk450 order) and 2 3S 3000mAh BUT I also took a 5S 3300mAH -> this one does not fit into the plastic frame I take some measurements and it should have be close but it does not fit So is there any GAUI frame that could fit 5S 3300Mah? Should I take a smaller 5S like 2650 or 3000. Could I fit the 5S on front top of the chassis (it looks a bit heavy for this no? I wanted as it seems to get better fly duration than with 2 3S Also I bought 500 and 550 mm wood blades but they are so heavy do you think it is a good thing to start with wood? Isn't fiberglass better for beginners? For now, I have carbon 425 and gaui wood 500/550 I will keep updated

I never used anything bigger than a 6s 2650 in my plastic frame, they were Turnigy but with a Gaui motor, they puffed almost immediately. I would think 2 3s 3000's provided they're not fat and too long should work. I wouldn't use the 5S setup.
Woodies are fine to start, just make sure your headspeed isn't over 2000 rpm and you should be fine with woodies and the plastic head. You can use FG and CF blades, but the same headspeed restrictions apply and that's because of the plastic head.
Have fun!
