Wow.. well, i'm still keyed up and shakin' my bros...and i'm going to apologize in advance for the long post, but i hope you can help me..
My plastic framed 503mm bladed hurri was coming in at me at a very high speed while it was inverted (if you thinkin' does he mean really high speed, ..the answer would be yes)..after a normal (normal for me lol) high tail slide. When it was about 100m and closing in at (on) me, (i know that seems far away, but trust me, if you've seem me fly, it isn't) i saw a brief puff of smoke come from either the motor or the esc (thanks to having no canopy installed) and i could instantly tell that all power to the rotor was gone. I still had all cyclic and some tail control and was able to roll the heli clockwise while pushing up and out of the inverted orientation, and controlled it down into a gradual hover and then a fall/landing in which the heli landed in throttle hold mode with the only damage being the collapsed main landing struts. An impressive landing considering i didn't have any time to think about it lol (thank you again sim gods).
After complete visual inspection, everything else appears okay.. all gears, main, tail and feathering shafts etc all check out okay.. i'm still amazed.
My concern now is not knowing whether the esc or motor failed..or both. I don't want to hook up a new motor and have it possibly fry my esc and other components and i don't want to swap out the esc for a new one only to have it smoked by a possibly bad motor.
I could just replace both motor and esc, but damn.. how many of us in this situation would want to do that? The esc is an align 75a and the motor is a z30a 1110 and never had an issue with either one in over 400 flights.
Any suggestions would be great at this point, because after my cc bec fried all of my electronics a while back to the tune of over $600...i'm kinda gun-shy about just pluggin stuff in to test things.
I'm just glad that the heli didn't hit me as it was coming in, because it was a reallllly close call. I mean, it passed me at about 2' away at head/neck level and i could feel the wind from the blades as it passed me as i controlled it into a landing.. it was wild but i did not drop the tx or break my concentration.
It figures though,.. no video of this cool event, but let me tell you guys, it takes a lot to shake me.. but this flight/landing sure did. I was able to put the heli down safely, but it landed about 40' behind where i was standing and about 60' from the take off point and... it was wild.
