So I got my setup checked out and adjusted at the local Heli store, and they said everything checked out well except for one thing. They were in the middle of the test hover and the gyro wasnt holding, so it just wasnt happening too well. DAMN my luck!
To cut things short, I was wondering if you guys know of anyone or have any leads to a decent gyro or someone who is selling one. The GY48 was a bad idea, but hey.....12 bucks is not that bad of a loss.
BTW if you guys are ever in the CA locale, visit funfly hobby. They are helicopter specialists and are SUPER cool dudes.

Unfortunately, I don't know of anyone selling a gyro. Have you checked eBay? Sometimes you can find someone selling a 401 there. On other sites, I've seen Spartan DS760's go for about $80.00. Scott

Sorry to hear that the inexpensive gyro didn't work out too well Paul. Unfortunately, I don't have any extra gyros either. In fact, I have been looking around for a good deal on a JR G770 or Spartan myself, for my '500' build. I got one of my JR G770's on sale pretty cheap from ReadyHeli about a year ago, and the other from John's Hobby on Ebay.

Paul, I am using JR tail servos on my 425 and 550 basically because I bought them as gyro/servo combos. I do have a Hyperion DS20 GMD tail servo that I just picked up for $25. I am going to use it on my Gaui "500" build whenever I get to it. Scott uses that servo on his HeadHunter framed Gaui 550 and told me that it worked very well with his set-up.
One thing nice about the JR gyros, is that you don't need to set them up in rate mode first, in fact, JR makes no mention of it in the manual. I actually posted a question here about the Ds20-GMD servo in the electronics section, and Scott gave me some info on it.

I love the Hyperion servos. On my flybar HeadHunter 550, I've got DS20xSMD's and the tail is a DS20GMD. I recommend buying the programming cable, too.

I was thinking about using one of these on my tail JR DS890 DS20xGCD or Futaba 9257
Any opinions?

I have no opinion on the JR DS890, though if you can find one, Horizon Hobby used to sell it in combo with a gyro.
DS20xGCD, plastic geared version of the DS20GMD. Probably the hot setup, now. Will take 6vdc, easy.
Futaba 9257, old standby tail servo. Good. Make sure to stepdown voltage to it with a regulator like the Align inline regulator.

I am using the JR DS890 on my 550. I got it like Scott had mentioned, as a gyro/servo combo with the G770 gyro, from a hobby dealer on EBay a couple of years ago. It works great for my flying skills. It is not rated to run 6 volts though, so you will need a voltage step-down between the gyro and servo. I think it was replaced with the JR DS8900 which is pretty pricey.
I recently picked up a DS20GMD for $25 but haven't used it yet as I am planning on putting it in a new "500" build.
