Has anybody used the Hyperion DS20-GMD servo on the tail, and if so, what gyro are you running it with? I picked one of these up for $25 shipped, and thought I would use it on my '500' build, whenever I get to it.
Is it necessary to get the cable to program it, or can it be set up just like any other tail servo?

Jerry,
That's the servo on the tail of my HeadHunter 550. It's a good servo. Though, you may have program deadband depending on your gyro. I had to bump mine up to 6usec. And yes, you need the cable and software. I'd try it first without programming. If it works, no need to program. What I saw with my Spartan DS760 gyro was the tail would tend to hunt. I mean, it wasn't bad, it just wasn't solid.

Thanks Scott, Not sure what gyro I am going to use yet. I am real happy with the JR G770's on my 425 and 550, but also looking around for any deals on a new Spartan, maybe a Quark if they suitable for a 500mm bladed helicopter. I use JR tail servos on the Hurris too, so wasn't sure how mixing different gyros and servos would work out. Not sure when I will start the build as I still need a gyro, RX, and a HeadHunter Heli frame kit. ;D I might look into getting a Z30-1100kv motor too. I have a Gaui 1100kv motor, and another motor that I am not even sure what it is. It has a 5mm shaft, looks similar to a Scorpion, and is anodized bright red. I got it with some other parts that I bought used.

The Quark will work just fine. People fly them all the way from 200/250's to .90 nitros without issue. The HeadHunter thing... I have two frames but not all the parts for them, so I have to wait until I get all the drawings and get parts made. Dunno about the motor thing except the Z30... great motor. Not as powerful as the Scorpion, but lighter. Scott

Hehe, just ribbing you a little on the HH frame Scott. I know it is going to take you some time to get things sorted. I am in no hurry for it right now. I will probably put the '500' together on a plastic frame, then upgrade it when you get the HH kits ready. I don't think my flying skills need the extra power of the Scorpion motor, so, I will look out for a deal on the Z30-1100. Since I needed to order some tail belts for the lil 200, I also went ahead and ordered the programming cable for the Hyperion servo too. I am thinking that I will use the Atlas servos on the Mars 480 build, so, might as well have the cable anyhow since I will probably need it then. Just need to poke around for some deals on a gyro and RX now. I tend to be a 'thrifty' helicopter hobbyist as you never know what might happen during these 'crappy' economic times.

True. I've been looking at things, too. eBay, for sale sections, etc...

I will get new Hyperion high voltage soon for the 550/ or 425 kit I bought.
I am also planning to get DS09 ands DS11 for the cheap Hurri 200 v2 I found (as I first found a cheap micro scale MD500 conversion kit)

Actually, with either, I don't think you can go wrong. I love Hyperion servos and their batteries haven't let me down (which if you read other places, you may hear different stories). I just take care of them. This will be the third season on my original 35C 6S 3300's! And my DS20xGMD's haven't missed a beat, either! Scott

DS20-GMD is from the first batch of Hyperion servos and do not have a coreless motor, which is a must for a tail servo. So, disregarding of how good Hyperion stuff is, this servo will never perform to the modern day level. DS20x-GMD supposedly comes with coreless motor, but ... too late. There are much better tail servos now. MKS BLS980 is one of them. If money is short Turnigy BLS980 is the same servo made by MKS and relabled by HK. This is why it sells at almost half the price. If money is not a concern there is Outrage BL9188 (made by MKS again). These are all brushless 760us/560Hz zero deadband compare to 1520us/333Hz 2us deadband in the best case of older servo.
