Thanks Scott, thanks Jerry. The forum has helped tremendously so far. The kit I’ve just received is the 450 basic with the long tail upgrades. I’m planning on having a fairly gentle hovering bird, nothing too agile!
The only other part ordered so far is a Z-Power Z20A-980, the rest of the shopping list is as follows, and please let me know if anything doesn’t look right or whether I need to add anything initially:
Tail: Hyperion HP-DS20x-GCD Cyclic: Hitec HS-6635HB ESC: HobbyWing Platinum-60A-Pro BEC: Dimension Eng. SportBEC Pinions for 550 blades; 14-50-20-61 – giving 1997 H/S I think, (or should I up the head speed to 2100 ish if I use fibre glass blades ?) will probably be keeping the plastic blade grips for the time being. Gyro: not sure yet, may try the Assan Mems one – unless anyone here screams don’t !! Doesn’t look as if I’ll manage to start the build for a couple of weeks at least with work being very busy atm.
Many thanks for looking Tim.

Your welcome Tim. A few thoughts, if you will;
Z20-980 is a popular motor for running 550mm blades
Haven't tried that tail servo, but, the older version, DS20-GMD was very popular
I have used several HobbyWing ESC's and bec's, so far, no problems with any of them. A 60amp will be fine for the Z20-980
Sport Bec; haven't used it, but have heard many positive comments on it
No info on the Hitech's so can't comment, sorry.
14-50-20-61 gearing with the z20-980 at 90% efficiency calculates to 1797rpm on my calculator, not 1997, so , might want to go with a 15T pinion.
Don't know anything about that gyro, never heard of it, sorry. I don't like fighting a tail so I usually use and recommend a proven brand like JR, Futaba, Spartan, etc.
Hope this helps, and good luck with the build.
Jerry

Assan... I found a thread on rcgroups about it. It seems decent although it appears to be a Spartan Quark or DS760 knockoff (software quark, case DS760). For the price it's worth a go unless you're a beginner. The reason I'm saying that is because the tail is something I have had problems with since day one, until I bought a Spartan. Tail electronics is not something that I would skimp on (not that I'm saying you're skimping). Having a bad tail is something that will drive you nuts and probably end up costing you a lot more in replacement parts than a name-brand gyro will. Think blades, skids, tail rotor blades, boom, and you get the picture.
Like Jerry, I haven't used that servo. If it's full sized, you'll be okay. I read somewhere that it may be programmable. If so, that's a good thing!

Thanks guys, points noted. I’ll keep you posted on the progress of the build, and which gyro I go with. I like the idea of having a Spartan strapped on the back though !
T.
Edit: May be a good opportunity to try both those gyros and report back the differences from a beginners point of view. Spartan £120.00 ish: Assan £6.00!

Quite a big difference in price there. Seriously, from what I've read the Assan is a good gyro. I read only limited failures and something with the servo frequency. Let us know how it goes! Another good thing is that on RCGroups, they appear to have a rep online answering questions.

Good'aye. Good to see a gaui site . I thought they had lost there appeal. Love the standard 550. cheap easy to fly and repair. Just getting back into the gaui after a break from flying. looking forward to doing some experimenting with different set ups. A new kit would be great , so good luck to everyone :-). and greetings from the gold coast Australia.

Welcome grunter. Hope you enjoy your time here. I think the inexpensive Gaui 425 kit is what helped Gaui become more popular. I just hope they don't abandon it too soon now that they have the X5 and soon to be released X4.

Hi, I am also inside for the giveaway
I have now: a 425 second hand (but I still don't have work on to make it flyable) two brand new 200 v2 kits (these kits were cheap some months ago) one brand new 255 kit bought on ebay (that I will build with new FES head and microbeast)
But for now, I am learning with MCP X (even if I don't know if it will help me a lot for my GAUI flybar heli)

Hey, for what it's worth, I think the mCP X is a helluva little wonder. It's a real bird.

The little 200's will keep you on your toes. Don't blink while flying them or they might just get away from you. I enjoy flying my little Gaui 200, but, at my age it is a little hard to see so I fly it pretty close to me. Gets scary sometimes though as it responds really quick.
If you need any help with the 'little ones' just ask. Ivan, (9sec240) has 200's and a 255 so I am sure he will be able to answer any questions you might have with them. He helped me get mine sorted out.

Count me in on the giveaway. I'm gathering the parts to build a 425 after struggling to learn on a 450 clone. I could use a spare airframe for crash parts.

Welcome gpraceman, thanks for joining us. If you are just learning to fly, you will find the Hurri 425 much more stable and easier to fly than a 450 sized helicopter.
