Well, since all of my helis seem to be flying great now, I have decided to start on my medium boomed Gaui "500" build. I am going to put it together on a spare plastic frame for right now so I can fine tune the gearing to get a head speed that works well. I have everything for the build except for a gyro, but also will upgrade the motor later too as I just have a stock Gaui 1100kv to put in it for now.
I will try to remember to take some pics as I go, and some details on the build. Here is a brief list of what I will be using for this build;
Stock plastic frame. ( Will upgrade it to a HeadHunter frame when Scott gets those ready for shipping out). Ar 6200 RX with satellite. DS 821's on cyclic. ( just because I have some extras) Align 75 amp ESC HobbyWing 5 amp UBEC Hyperion DS20 GMD tail servo Gaui 1100kv motor ( looking out for a deal on a Z30 1100 ) JR or Spartan gyro, haven't decided which yet. Have 2 unpainted Hurri 550 Fusuno canopies, just have to splash some paint on one
Don't have a lot of extra time right now, so it may be quite a while before it is finished, but, I am going to start working on it in my spare time.

I am going to try to remember to take some build pics of the plastic framed version even though I may have to take them all over again later for the HH version. My 425 and my 550 fly much different from each other, so I think the 500 will be interesting as an in between. Who knows, it might end up being my favorite.
Also, have an update already. Bill PM'd me regarding a new Z30 1100 kv motor that he has, but never used. The price was fair so now I will have the motor that I want to install. Just need a gyro and I am all set.

The 500mm is hands down my favorite of all the flavors. And the plastic frame is very underrated imo.. it seems just as happy as the cf version, even at higher hs's ..even feels like less weight in the air. If/when Gaui finally comes out with a single geared plastic version of the x5..(something like the logo frames) i would be all on it... unless they wanted hundreds for an x5 plastic frame kit

Well, I doubt that Gaui will come out with a plastic framed version of the X5 as everybody seems to be going with CF frames now. I have never had any problems or complaints with my 2 plastic framed Hurri's.

I hear ya.. i've only had 3 plastic framed hurris, but they have all worked out well and take some serious abuse. The disadvantage to the plastic version right now is splitting the frame to change bearings (they could have just used bearing blocks/frame stiffeners like the cf frame uses). The only reason i still run the CF frames is because there isn't a better, more beefy plastic framed version to choose from with better battery mounting, more play room for the larger 61 front gear, more motor mounting room.. without having to worry about spacing out the arms to make it all happy. I've seen a plastic framed logo wipe out pretty bad and that frame is tough man.. Gaui shouldn't rule that cost point out as an option Anyway, i think you will really like it setup as a 500mm and i hope you get to try it out soon! I'm headin' out to get a few flights in before dark. Peace

Well, I got the new Z30 1100 motor from Bill today, so I just need a gyro. I found a lightly used JR G770 on another forum for a decent price so I bought it. Well, at least I think I did. The guy has been a member there for 2 years, but, his PayPal account was 'unverified', so , don't know if I will get it, or get ripped off. I have never sent money to anybody who's PayPal account was unverified, simply because it only takes a few minutes to get verified and everybody should take those few minutes to do it just for peace of mind to others that deal with them.
Getting ready to take some boring "bench pics" soon, but, the Outlaws, er, I mean In-laws are coming up from Kentucky to visit next week so my build will likely get delayed for a week or so.
Gotta get online and 'hone' my Rummy playing skills as they are die hard rummy players and play for big money. Don't wanna lose my shirt, lol . To get an idea of where my in-laws come from, check out my old thread in the off-topic section called ' having trouble getting to your house'.
The build should continue in a week or so.

Well, I got the gyro today. Not ready to install it yet, but I did bench test it by hooking it up to an RX and plugging a DS20 GMD servo into it. I rotated the gyro slightly back and forth and the servo responded, so hopefully it will work as it should. I will post some boring bench pics of all the parts as soon as I get time. Then try to post some pics of the build as it progresses. Arrrggg, I just remembered that I forgot to order some 500mm blades for this build. I have some woodies, but I don't trust them at a head speed of over 2000, so I better order some CF blades. It's always something.

Well, I kinda suffered a double set-back on this build. First, I had to entertain my guests up from Kentucky for a week. Then, I had to sharpen some 3/4" drill bits for the truck repair that I am doing at work. (See my build thread in the off topic section) Not thinking,(and this happens often when you get old) I set up my drill bit sharpener on my heli build bench and sharpened 4, 3/4" drill bits and split the points. The metal 'dust' ended up on my heli frame and now the bearings are all full of the metal dust. So, now I have to order all new bearings and start over. Anybody want to buy some brand new, never used bearings, with a tiny bit of "extra" metal in them, lol?

Sorry to hear about the delay, Jerry. Stuff happens, eh? Aren't the bearings sealed?

Jerry, were the bearings greased up or oiled up? If not, I would just blow everything off and call it a day.

Scott and Ivan, to be honest, I don't really know about the bearings. I can't really see them well enough to know if they are sealed, and don't know if they have been pre-lubed. They are stock bearings. I can see all the metal dust in the OW bearing as it was not installed and just sitting on the bench. I was poking around in my parts box though and found a new 19T and 20T OWB, and also new OW shaft bearings, so I am just going to install new ones. I am going to stick the main shaft in and give it a spin to see if it feels "notchy". If not I will go ahead and use the main shaft bearings for now. Depending on how it flys, this will likely be the one that gets updated to a HH frame someday, so it will get all new bearings again then. Hehe, the wife's Seal Point kitty, the one that is always with me wherever I go, was watching me and was laying on the tail boom, so he saved the tail case from all the metal dust. I just had to blow the dust off of him with the shop vac. ;D I have an extra frame laying there that I have been tinkering with too, which has used up a little of my time. I am trying to figure out how to install a main drive belt system instead of the gears, but, the plastic frame does not really have the room I need as I would like to install 2 "idler" pulleys also. Now, the HeadHunter frames might be a different story with the servos mounted outside the frame. I don't have one yet to see it in person, but, I am thinking I could eliminate the OW shaft completely, and mount the motor lower and more forward in the frame Then, add an extra belt gear to the main shaft with a OWB installed in it. A single belt would run from motor to main shaft, and the original main gear would drive the tail. Stop laughing, it looks good on paper, lmao....

Dude if you get that working... I'll buy it! Scott Well, if I can make it work, I would be more than happy to share my idea. But first, I gotta get my new "500" build finished. I will tinker with the belt drive over the winter.

Yep, I still have that Mars 480 that I haven't even taken out of the box yet. I am not sure if I am going to build it, or maybe just sell it, I dunno.

Well, the '500' build is officially on hold due to several reasons. With the holidays coming up and the nasty winters here south of the Great Lakes I probably won't get to maiden any new helicopters very soon.
Also, knowing that Scott is currently working on making a complete CF and CNC frame upgrade for the 425/550, I have also decided that it would be a good idea to wait and see when it will be available before continuing on with this build, as I would like to be the first to build one of his new frames.
I plan on continuing with this build sometime after the new year as I have all of the parts and electronics for it, just not sure yet if it will be a plastic framed Hurri like it started out, or a HeadHunter framed Hurri, which it will definitely be someday depending on when it is available. Kudos to Scott on the upgrade, I am looking forward to it.
